Recall to handler with distractions

Your First Class at Four Paws

Everything you need to know to feel prepared, confident, and excited for your first session.

Your first class is all about setting you up for success in a friendly, supportive environment. Whether you’re starting with a lively puppy or a more experienced dog, our trainers are here to guide you every step of the way.

What to Bring

  • Collar and Identification

In the UK, it is a legal requirement for your dog to wear a collar with an identification tag displaying your name and address. Any dog without a collar is considered a stray dog. This simple step ensures that if your dog ever gets lost, they can be quickly and safely returned to you. While not required by law, we strongly recommend adding your phone number to the tag, as it provides the quickest way for someone to contact you.

At Four Paws, we require all dogs to wear a collar during training. This helps ensure their safety by allowing handlers to quickly and gently take hold of them if necessary.

Additionally, all dogs must be microchipped with up-to-date contact information. A microchip acts as a permanent form of identification and is especially important if your dog’s collar or tag is lost. Keeping your information current not only ensures compliance with the law but also shows responsible pet ownership and helps keep your dog safe.

  • Collars and harnesses

We welcome a variety of collars and harnesses, including nylon, woven, and leather options—whatever works best for you and your dog. Many owners find harnesses with a chest ring helpful, especially if their dog tends to pull on the lead. If you already use training aids such as a head collar, specialised harness, or double lead, feel free to bring them along.

However, please note that at Four Paws, all dogs are required to wear a collar during training. Even if your dog usually wears a harness, a collar provides an easy way to safely take hold of them if needed.

Please note: Check chains are not allowed. If fitted correctly, half-check collars are permitted as they provide control without excessive pressure.

  • Vaccination Certificate

To ensure the health and safety of all dogs and participants, it’s essential that your dog is fully vaccinated before attending classes. On your first class bring your dog’s vaccination record as proof that they are up to date on core vaccinations, including those for distemper, parvovirus, and leptospirosis. These vaccines help protect your dog from contagious diseases and reduce the risk of spreading illnesses to other dogs in the class. Regular vaccinations also contribute to the overall well-being of your canine companion, allowing them to thrive in social settings like group training.

If you have any questions about required vaccinations, feel free to contact us for clarification before attending.

  • Appropriate Clothing

Classes take place outdoors, offering a natural and engaging environment for both dogs and their owners. Since the sessions continue through various weather conditions, it’s important to dress appropriately for the forecast. Wear sturdy footwear and layered clothing to ensure comfort in changing temperatures or light rain. For your dog, consider a waterproof coat if needed.

In cases of severe weather, such as storms or extreme heat, classes may be cancelled for everyone’s safety. Be sure to check our calendar for timely updates on cancellations or rescheduling. Preparing for the elements helps ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for you and your dog.

  • Leads

Choose a material or soft leather lead that is 5 to 7 feet long for the best control and comfort during training. Avoid using chain leads, which can be harsh and difficult to handle, retractable leads that lack control and can pose safety risks, or frayed leads that might break unexpectedly. For specific exercises, such as recall or long-distance commands, trainers may provide long leads to ensure your dog can move freely while staying secure. Using the right lead not only enhances safety but also helps create a smoother and more effective training experience.

  • Mat or Towel

It’s important that your dog feels comfortable and secure during class, especially when it’s not their turn to participate. Providing a cosy spot for your dog to relax can help them stay calm and focussed. We recommend bringing a mat, towel, or small blanket that your dog is familiar with. This familiar item can serve as a "home base" for them during class and make it easier for them to settle down when needed. Ideally, the mat or towel should be large enough for your dog to lie down comfortably but easy for you to carry and set up.

  • Rewards

Positive reinforcement is at the heart of our training philosophy, helping to build a strong bond between you and your dog. To make the most of each session, bring plenty of small, non-crumbly treats such as cheese or sausage—these are both enticing and easy to handle. Non-squeaky toys can also be great rewards for dogs who enjoy play. Using a treat bag is highly recommended, as it keeps your rewards accessible and allows you to focus on your training without fumbling for treats.

Please don’t forget poo bags 🐶.

Arrival

To help your dog start off on the right paw, please arrive 5–10 minutes early to give them time to settle before class begins.

When you arrive for the first time, initially leave your dog safely in the car for a moment and check in with one of our friendly Four Paws team members. They’ll guide you on where to go and help ensure a smooth start to your session.

For everyone’s comfort and safety:

  • 🐾 Give other dogs space – Some may be nervous or need time to adjust.
  • 🐾 Keep your dog on a lead at all times in the car park and training area.
  • 🐾 Be patient – First classes can be exciting, but a calm arrival helps set the tone for a great session!

If you have any questions, just ask — we’re here to help make your first class an enjoyable experience for both you and your dog!
